"In Late 2009, I looked into VOIP - seeing that it could probably cut our phone costs by about 70%. With a background in software development, I was sceptical about using open source (free) software. I chose a system called 3CX which cost about $1000 for the features I wanted (plus the cost of a machine to host it on). The next 18 months or so were an absolute nightmare. I went through 5 "experts” - about 3 routers (one of which was around $2000) - and I even tried completely rewiring our network because calls were dropping out. Very stressful..."
